Just hours after the conclusion of the Olympics and the termination of the NHL trade freeze enforced during the Olympics, the Pittsburgh Penguins bolstered their defense. The Penguins acquired Florida Panthers defenseman Jordan Leopold in exchange for a 2010 second round draft pick, according to NHL.com .
The Penguins re-enter the post-Olympic NHL season sitting at 76 points, good for fourth in the Eastern Conference. In Leopold, they gain a defenseman who has scored seven goals, dished 11 assists this season and has a plus-minus ratio of minus-seven.
The 29-year-old Leopold was originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 1999 NHL Draft. Leopold joins a defense anchored by long-time veteran Sergei Gonchar and Alex Goligoski.
