Friday saw the offensive linemen begin the physical portion of the 2010 NFL Combine with the bench press test. For those of you unfamiliar with the process, the prospects are asked to bench press 225 lbs. as many times as they can.
Naturally, the expectation for a "good" performance varies by position. The "bigs," (offensive and defensive linemen) are expected to rep 225 lbs. somewhere between 25-38 times. Anything below is considered a weak effort, anything above a mammoth effort.
While weight room strength doesn't always translate to on field strength, the bench press is important in helping scouts determine which prospects are "freaks of nature," and which will have problems handling the NFL elites.
