Breakdown
Joe Testa was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Wagner College in 2008. He was primarily a starter in college, posting a 19-18 record with a 3.75 ERA and a 9.24 K/9 ratio.
But teams passed on Testa due to his lack of size, which hasn’t been a problem up to this point in his career. He began his professional career by appearing in eight games with the Gulf Coast League Twins, Testa was then called up to Advanced-A Fort Myers just in time to help the Miracle advance to the Florida State League finals.
In 2009, Testa began the season with the Beloit Snappers before finishing off the season in Fort Myers. He’s equipped with a vast repertoire of pitches, including an impressive cutter.
He doesn’t have great velocity on any of his pitches, in fact he tops out around 90 mph, but he does fool hitters with outstanding movement.
Testa has a walk rate of 3.97 BB/9, which he’ll need to lower while he moves up through the system.

2010 Outlook
Testa’s proven that he’s ready for more challenging competition, which the Florida State League isn’t going to be giving him. Look for him to start in Double-A New Britain in 2010.
