If you were to ask a Baltimore Orioles fan who Lou Montanez is, a vast majority of them would say, “Lou who?” If you followed up by saying, “Montanez won the Triple Crown in 2008 at Double-A and went on to hit a home run in his first official major league at bat,” their response would be, “why in the hell is he not on the club?”
The unfortunate answer to that is bad luck.
As a senior in high school, Lou Montanez had the appearance of a future star. The young 18-year-old phenom was drafted third overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2000. To go along with the third overall pick, Montanez got a very sizeable signing bonus ($2.75 million).
