Can Khalif Barnes Get a Shot with the Oakland Raiders?

Posted: 27th June 2010 by Carl Cockerham in NFL
After all the offseason improvements, Oakland Raiders look to be a left tackle away from  contention. Jared Gaither looks good in silver and black, but it doesn't look like that will happen. It appears now that the Raiders are going with a guy already on the team. That made me think. Can Khalif Barnes get a shot? Khalif Barnes is a former second round pick out of Washington. He came into the league and anchored ...

Green Bay Packers Unit Grades, Volume X: Mike McCarthy

Posted: 27th June 2010 by MJ Kasprzak in NFL
In the final series of my unit grades, I put the magnifying glass over head coach Mike McCarthy. In such a light, every flaw is all the more obvious, and the heat can cause one to burst into flames. Well, such would be the case if my opinion had any weight... The first measurement of a head coach's success is obviously his win-loss record. Since these grades are based on 2009, the ...
Free agency is always an exciting time in sports.  With the NBA set for a very big offseason with the Lebron James saga still heating up, it appears that the NFL will deliver it's fair share of blockbuster signings in the coming months. For the most part, the NFL's free agency period hasn't disappointed.  So far we have seen many big name players signed to new homes, and when we were ...

Baltimore Ravens 2010 Preview: Biggest Strength and Weakness

Posted: 27th June 2010 by Josh Broudy in NFL
Today, the subject is the Baltimore Ravens. Biggest Strength: Offensive Line This line is by far the best in football.  Protecting the blind side is fittingly now Michael Oher. He was under a lot of pressure perform last season, and exceeded at right tackle. This kid is uber-athletic and has prototypical size. Oher really finishes his run blocks well for a young player.  Manning the right tackle spot (assuming he won't be traded) is ...
Philadelphia Eagles backup QB Michael Vick was, or wasn't, involved in an altercation in the early hours last Friday, that much we all know. We also know that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could enforce a multiple-game suspension on Vick for violating league policies. Vick made the right move and decided to leave his birthday celebration before any shooting took place, but he could still face infractions simply for making the NFL ...

Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand Arrested For DUI

Posted: 26th June 2010 by Ryan Steck in NFL
On the same day the Detroit Lions were forced to stop their final minicamp practice early because of a massive team brawl, team President Tom Lewand was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The news was first reported by WXYZ-TV. Apparently Lewand was arrested on Friday night near Houghton Lake in Roscommon County, and then released. He released this statement Saturday. "I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them. ...
In the physical AFC North division, the Cleveland Browns have been a finesse team with very little success. Under second-year coach Eric Mangini, that’s changing. Forget all the talk about the Browns switching to the West Coast Offense.  It’s not happening—at least not in 2010. Sure there may be a few West Coast plays but the Browns' bread and butter will be their running game. While finishing the ...
Is was a forgone conclusion that the Cleveland Browns needed to make improvements to an inconsistent defense following the 2009 season. The unit gave up an average of 389.3 yards a game, second to last in the NFL. The secondary couldn't cover, the linebackers couldn't tackle, and the defense finished ranked 29th and 28th against the pass and run, respectively. Everyone knows the front office in Cleveland has put much of its ...
As it turns out, former Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount caused more damage to himself after he punched Boise State's Byron Hout square in the jaw last season. The right cross came in the postgame of Oregon's season opener loss at Bronco Stadium, and the return of Blount following a suspension in 2008. Once again, Blount would be suspended and ultimately go undrafted. Looking back at his junior year with the Ducks, Blount ...
It's a great quarterback nickname, coined by the cynical New Yorkers of the late 1970s. "Parkway Joe" Pisarcik, was described by the tabloids' sportswriters as "the bargain basement quarterback." No $427,000 bonus here.  No photographs of Parkway on...a Parkway.  No Super Bowl victory guarantees.  No Super Bowls. Then, the following year it was, “Where the hell is Morehead State University?” Tough room, here in Jersey. It's in Morehead, on I-64, about an hour east of ...
