As we will do each week throughout the season, we will today take a look at Accuscore's playoff forecaster to see how the previous weeks games influenced the division's playoff race. The Nationals tremendously improved their chances to make the playoffs last week as the club went 4-2. With this their projected playoff chances jumped from 10.5 percent to 23.8 percent. Disappointingly, their chance to win the division only ...
Kennedy, Zimmerman Power Washington Nationals to 3-2 Win Over New York Mets
Posted: 11th May 2010 by William Yoder in MLB
After his previous start that yielded six runs and five walks to the Atlanta Braves in 5.1 innings, many thought that Washington Nationals rookie starter Luis Atilano may be starting to unravel. He shut those detractors up last night, however, as he threw 5.1 shutout innings helping the Nats topple the New York Mets to improve to second place in the National League East.
Deception was the key to ...

John Lannan Out, Jason Marquis Coming Back for Washington Nationals?
Posted: 6th May 2010 by William Yoder in MLB
The Washington Nationals' nominal ace, John Lannan, will miss at least one start with soreness in his left forearm and elbow. Lannan first recognized the pain in his April 21 start against the Colorado Rockies, a game in which he threw 107 pitches and surrendered four runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. The opening day starter has struggled so far this season, going 1-2 with ...
Should the Washington Nationals’ Ivan Rodriguez Be Batting Second?
Posted: 6th May 2010 by William Yoder in MLB
Ivan Rodriguez continues to defy the odds.
At the age of 38, few thought he would be a productive everyday player in the majors in 2010. However, out of the gates, Rodriguez is leading the majors in hitting and despite speculation of an upcoming fall to reality, he has kept on hitting.
Entering Friday's game he is batting .405/.432/.514. While that kind of production is likely unsustainable, the Nationals need to try ...

Strasburg hits a speed bump, still looks towards Syracuse
Posted: 2nd May 2010 by William Yoder in MLB, NHL
The Nationals top prospect Stephen Strasburg endured what was arguably his worst start as a professional today. In a game that was postponed by rain, Strasburg struggled with command issues in front of a hometown Harrisburg crowd. In total, the right-hander allowed a season high six hits, three earned runs, and three walks over 4 2/3 innings against the Altoona Curve.
While the final line does not look good for Strasburg, ...
While the Mets are celebrating their ascension back into relevance with their eight-game winning streak and Phillies are floundering without their anchor, Jimmy Rollins, the Nationals are on a high of their own.
With the win over the Florida Marlins last night, the club earned their third win in a row, finished April above .500 for the first time in five years, and quietly slipped into second place in the National ...

Posted: 28th April 2010 by William Yoder in MLB
The Nationals called up Roger Bernadina from Triple-A Syracuse to help a banged-up bench, while optioning lefty Jesse English to make room.
Bernadina got the nod after going on a tear; in 61 at bats for Syracuse he's stolen seven bases while batting .377 with a .426 OBP and a .541 SLG percentage.
On the other hand, English has been very effective in the bullpen, posting a 3.86 ERA in seven appearances.

Livan Hernandez is Officially an Ace thanks to Win Over Chicago
Posted: 28th April 2010 by William Yoder in MLB
For the fourth time this season, Livan Hernandez put the Nationals on his back and carried them late into the game.
By doing that, he gave them a chance to earn a victory.
With early run support, Washington was able to do just that as they defeated the Cubs 3-1 and nipped a one game losing streak in the bud.
Throughout baseball, the aces of pitching staff's are called stoppers.
They are the pitchers ...
