John McDonald and Matt Palmer: Players I Love, the Unheralded Backups
Posted: 11th March 2010 by Nino Colla in MLB
There is no real glory in being a backup, but somebody has to do it.
Most backups are unappreciated—typically role players, hitters or pitchers on the team, backups are designed to do one job and one job only.
Some backups are expected to fill in at certain points, maybe at one point more than another.
They are widely unappreciated and often criticized when they don’t produce in the few opportunities they get.
Granted, while ...
Players I Love: The Humbled Studs:Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Coghlan
Posted: 10th March 2010 by Nino Colla in MLB
While I tend to gravitate towards the players in the game that don’t get big time recognition, I still find a place in my heart for people who do.
Still, you aren’t going to find me talking about why I love Albert Pujols or Joe Mauer in this space. Although, the sport is in a great state with those two as the game’s best ambassadors.
No, today’s players I love are guys ...
Players I Love: Denard Span and Adam Rosales Make the All-Effort Team

“If my uniform doesn’t get dirty, I haven’t done anything in the baseball game.”
Players who live by this Ricky Henderson quote play the game like nobody else.
Players who live by this quote hustle every play of the game like it’s the only one they’ll ever make.
And that’s why I love players who play the game that way.
Adam Rosales runs the bases after a home run like he’s trying to beat out a ...
Players I Love: Franklin Gutierrez and Nyjer Morgan Are Defensive Studs

How do you truly measure defense in Major League Baseball?
Some of the greatest defensive players to play the game have taken home numerous Rawlings Gold Gloves. Ozzie Smith didn’t get the nickname “The Wizard” because it was cool, his glove was simply magical.
Omar Vizquel will one day get into the Hall of Fame and it will not be largely due to his offense. Ivan Rodriguez is arguably one of the ...
I feel like I have a few months to make up for, don’t you?
Sure the hot stove league is a season in itself, but after months of baseball withdrawal, I’m ready to make up for all of it in one month.
That is why I’ve declared March as the Month of Baseball!
For the next four weeks, I’m going to be putting out a series of articles that will downright blow my ...
Cleveland Indians 2010 Lineup: Why Cabrera, Sizemore Swap Is No Big Deal
Posted: 1st March 2010 by Nino Colla in MLB
Days after announcing his first big surprise about Russell Branyan being his primary starter at first base, Manny Acta stirred the pot once again.
While he had this idea in his head since he first got the job, Acta is just now making it known that center fielder Grady Sizemore will be moving out of his long-time leadoff spot.
Asdrubal Cabrera will be replacing him.
Even more surprising, was the news that Sizemore ...
Russell Branyan Signing: A Bargain of Confusion for the Cleveland Indians
Posted: 20th February 2010 by Nino Colla in MLB
For the first time that I can remember in the Mark Shapiro-era of the Cleveland Indians, the team might have actually made a sound free agent signing that didn't involve the term "low-risk."
Granted, the reported deal that Russell Branyan has accepted is a one-year deal worth $2 million dollars, this isn't a typical garbage heap signing Shapiro has pulled off in the past.
This is more along the lines of Kerry ...
Cleveland Indians’ Five Hottest Spring Training Questions
Posted: 17th February 2010 by Nino Colla in MLB
It's been a rather quiet offseason for the Cleveland Indians on a national scale, but that doesn't mean there haven't been rumblings about the Tribe since the end of October.
The hiring of Manny Acta and his coaching staff has energized the fan base in one way or another. Now with pitchers and catchers just days away from reporting to the Indians' complex in Goodyear, there are plenty of offseason ...
The past ten years of Cleveland Indians baseball has been a wild ride. As fans living in the present its hard to call upon some memories of the past to put the present into perspective. Starting from the beginning of 2000, here are some moments from the past decade that can help shape our memory of what we'll remember when we think of the 2000-2009 Cleveland Indians.
The following was a ...
Cleveland Indians: Sizemore’s Blunder Helping Or Hurting Image?
Posted: 3rd December 2009 by Nino Colla in MLB
It's the quiet ones that you never suspect. If you asked who is the least likely on the Cleveland Indians to be involved in any sort of public situation unrelated to baseball, Grady Sizemore would probably the last person I'd think of. Here is a superstar that seeks not to be a superstar. He strives for greatness on the field, but could do without the accolades and attention ...
