The Marlins inserted Sean West in the rotation during the middle of the season, and like rookie pitchers, West experienced the highs and lows in learning on the job.
West started off well, but then he struggled to the point the Marlins sent him down in the minors. He came back in August, and overall, he did well enough to help keep Marlins afloat in the wild-card race.

Winning baseball teams load their roster with unsung heroes, and the Marlins display several of them.
Ross Gload is one of them. He performs when Fredi Gonzalez calls him off the bench to come in as a pinch-hitter.
We experience seeing Gload hit home runs late in the game to give the Marlins the lead or the win several times this year.
His last big hit was a walk-off home run that ...
When a pitcher makes his rookie debut or come back from an injury, it takes at least five or six starts before we can judge how he does.
The Marlins activated Anibal Sanchez off the disabled list on August 20th, and Sanchez made five starts since. On Thursday night, he made his sixth start by facing the Reds at Great American Park.

This became known as the Joba Rule.
Two years later, the Yankees continue to protect their asset by setting a limit of innings that he can pitch in a season.
Chamberlain recently took several starts off so that his arm can ...
The Marlins won seven of eight after defeating the Mets, 12-4, at Citi Field on Thursday night. Unfortunately for them, they gained no games in the Wild Card standings during that stretch.
The Rockies never lose these days, and before the Marlins took on the Mets this evening, they realized they could not lose further ground in the standings after the Rockies swept the Reds Thursday afternoon to extend their winning ...
In September, Major League Baseball (MLB) teams expand their 25-man roster to a 40-man roster by calling up guys from their farm system. The Marlins called up Cameron Maybin, Rick VandenHurk, Andrew Miller and Chris Volstad.
Maybin earns his playing time because of his work in the minors, not to mention Jeremy Hermida offered nothing as a hitter. VandenHurk enters the rotation since the Marlins have an opening for that fourth starter role.
Miller ...
