When you walk into a hockey arena, ready to enjoy a fast-paced, hard-hitting NHL game, take a good look around.
These people are no plain, ordinary sports fans.
Hockey may not be a well-represented sport worldwide, but it isn't a knock on its loyal supporters.
They are just as passionate as the soccer fans currently ...
Going along with my previous article wrapping the Pittsburgh Penguins' 2009-2010 season , I decided there was no better way to sum up the team's performance than an end of season grade for each player.
I am taking into account both the regular season and playoffs and I'm judging them on how well they executed their respective jobs on the ice.

Pittsburgh Penguins: A Look Back at a Successful Season
Posted: 14th June 2010 by Laura Falcon in NHL
On September 28, 2008, Dave Molinari wrote the following in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette : "Don't get the wrong idea. History doesn't completely rule out the possibility of the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2009. It just comes awfully close."
The 2009-2010 season started with commemorating the victory that many, including Molinari, called improbable, if not impossible.
The raising of the Stanley Cup banner minutes before the first game of the season ...
The NHL recently donated street hockey equipment to the United States Army to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 235th anniversary and to kick-off the first NHL Street Hockey League at Camp Victory in Baghdad.
This generous donation from the NHL couldn't have come at a better time, just a week after the United States acknowledged the service men and women on Memorial Day.
We are also at the most epic times in the ...
Days after the Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated from Stanley Cup contention, the articles of hysteria began flowing about what went wrong in the playoffs and what to do to fix it.
The first came from John Grigg on The Hockey News, focusing on why the Pens must trade Evgeni Malkin .
The next came yesterday morning on the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review from the controversial Rob Rossi about what needs to be done to ...
2010 NHL Playoffs: Pittsburgh Penguins’ Top Five Performers

For the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 2009-2010 season has been one centered around resilience and answering the call of being "the targeted ones" as defending Stanley Cup Champions.
Fighting for Lord Stanley isn't the same as it used to be; now it's much more difficult to find repeat winners because of the evolution of the game and players who lace up every game.
But despite the pressures on this still very young team, ...
Ironman Down: Can Pittsburgh Penguins Get It Done Without Jordan Staal?
Posted: 1st May 2010 by Laura Falcon in NHL
It was the moment when Pittsburgh Penguins fans watching Game One of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals against the Montreal Canadiens held their breath.
At the start of a penalty kill halfway through the second period, Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban picked up his skate to swivel his body at the Pens' blue line and landed on the top of penalty killer Jordan Staal's foot.
The result was a laceration of the extensor halluci ...
Fresh off of my last final of the semester, I received a forwarded text message on Thursday from a fellow Penguins fan while waiting to pay for my lunch:
PENS ALERT: Sidney Crosby a finalist for HART TROPHY as NHL MVP along with Alex Ovechkin & Henrik Sedin.
I can't speak for the rest of the hockey community, but I was stunned when I saw the finalists for the Hart Trophy.
To be ...
All it takes is a second-long distraction.
Unfortunately for Jordan Leopold, he made it two and the result was one of the nastiest open-ice collisions of the playoffs thus far.
After receiving a D to D pass from Alex Goligoski, Leopold started a rush to the offensive zone when Nick Foligno attempted to poke the puck away from him. Preoccupied with maintaining possession, Leopold didn't notice a bulldozing Andy Sutton who laid ...
Saying Goodbye To My Grandfather’s Project, Mellon Arena
Posted: 8th April 2010 by Laura Falcon in NHL
When the Pittsburgh Penguins hit the ice on Thursday to play the New York Islanders, it will be the final NHL regular season game played at Mellon Arena before it hits "retirement."
Make no mistake, the concourses and dressing rooms are a tight squeeze, the chairs are old, and the ice is bad, but this place will be missed by all who have been able to experience the Mellon.
I would like ...
