With only a few games in the books so far, there are some unusual names that are carrying some fantasy teams. While unexpectedly strong performances are always nice, how should you deal with them? Is your hot starter for real, or should you move him while his value is high?
That's my goal in this article: to separate the true sleepers from the guys that shouldn't be more than the ...
Do The White Sox Have The Pieces To Trade For an Elite Player?
Posted: 19th October 2009 by Joe Slowik in MLB
While the White Sox should have some spending ability on the free agent market, most of the top players will probably end up beyond their price range. It's highly unlikely that they will be able to sign Matt Holliday or Jason Bay, and even adding players like Chone Figgins or Bobby Abreu could be difficult.
However, there could be a few solid fits on the trade market. Players like Carl Crawford, ...
The inconsistency of the Sox offense was one of the bigger issues for the team this season.
At times they would crush the ball all over the yard, but far more often, they would struggle to put rallies together. It didn't take an elite pitcher to put the Sox offense to sleep either; in fact they could make guys like David Huff and Sergio Mitre look like Zack Greinke.
The Sox finished ...
The Sox already splurged during the regular season with the acquisitions of Jake Peavy and Alex Rios.
However, they may not be done spending. Even with those two large contracts added to the payroll and factoring in $10 million for arbitration figures, their payroll would still only reach about $80 million. Their payroll for last season was $96 million on opening day, which theoretically gives them some wiggle room financially.
So let's ...
One of the biggest issues for the Sox this season has been the bullpen. They have the 21st ranked bullpen ERA in baseball and are 18-27 in one-run games.
They simply haven't been able to win games late, and a major factor in that is their suspect bullpen. Their relievers put way too many hitters on base and aren't good enough to pitch through troubles.
Fixing the pen will be a challenge. ...
The Sox have suffered through a frustrating 2009 season and it's not getting any better.
After surprisingly winning the 2008 AL Central title, they have limped along on the fringe of the race all year. They currently sit at 73-80 and 9 games behind the division-leading Tigers, nearly mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
Even during this down year, some things look good for the White Sox. The rotation should be very strong ...
Having already given my analysis for the Sox position players, I'm now moving on to the pitching staff.
The pitching was the main reason that the Sox stayed relatively competitive for most of the year. Though tonight's drubbing at the hands of the Kansas City Royals won't help these numbers, the Sox are second in the American League and eighth in baseball in team ERA.
However, that doesn't mean that everyone on ...
Now that the baseball season is winding to a close and the races are essentially over, it's time to look back and evaluate what went on in 2009.
The Sox were picked to finish in third place by most publications and that is exactly where they are right now. Though they were in the race for the division most of the year, they never built enough momentum to take a lead and ...
Is It Worth It for Jake Peavy To Get Started If the Chicago White Sox are Done?
Posted: 10th September 2009 by Joe Slowik in MLB
Jake Peavy has yet to throw a pitch for the Chicago White Sox, but he's apparently nearing a return. The 28-year-old right-hander has not made a major league start since June 8, but claimed that he is ready to go after a solid bullpen session on Wednesday.
From the Chicago Tribune: "I have no reservations about anything. I'm so anxious to pitch. I'll take what I can get."
The Sox still have ...
