Altitude Sickness, Immigration Madness, and a Socrates Sighting

Posted: 28th April 2010 by Jeff Summers in MLB
It used to be that a trip to Denver and Coors Field meant baseballs would leave the stadium like a squadron of F-16 fighter jets. With the introduction of baseballs being stored in a humidor the runs per game dropped dramatically putting the stadium on par with many others in Major League Baseball by negating the effects of dry air at altitude. At least that is what we had been ...

Sidd Finch: A Baseball and April Fools Joke

Posted: 1st April 2010 by Jeff Summers in MLB
The sport of baseball has always been tightly coupled with pranks and practical jokes. Maybe it's because players spend 162 games together, live in close quarters for nearly half a year, or that the flow of the game allows for the shenanigans of the clown. Regardless of why it happens, baseball lends itself very well to the offbeat characters and tomfoolery of jokesters. Rookies are always subjected to pranks. The ...

After the 2007 season that saw the Arizona Diamondbacks exceed expectations and reach the National League Championship Series, the team decided to make a blockbuster trade to bring in another front line starter. General Manager Josh Byrnes would make a trade with the Oakland Athletics that would bring Dan Haren to the desert for several top prospects. The trade was warranted and given the success Haren has had with the ...

Earlier this week I received an e-mail from the Arizona Diamondbacks Season Ticket Holder Services group. In the e-mail they outlined another new benefit for being a season ticket holder. In our season ticket holder package we received a voucher to be redeemed at Chase Field during any home game in April or May. The voucher is good for a “Fan Loyalty Cup” and can be picked up at the ...

Diamondbacks Introduce Merchandising Partner

Posted: 26th March 2010 by Jeff Summers in MLB
For as long as the Diamondbacks have played at Bank One Ballpark/Chase Field, there have been "Team Shops" to sell the team’s merchandise. In the early years, there were "Team Shops" not only at the stadium but also around valley malls. This, of course, made it easy for fans to pick up team merchandise at a location close to where they live. My wife of course hated the idea ...

Justin Upton Injures Ankle in Arizona Diamondbacks Loss

Posted: 25th March 2010 by Jeff Summers in MLB
At this point in spring training the players have settled into their routines. Starting pitchers are stretching themselves out to five to seven innings, building arm strength as they make their final push to Opening Day. This is usually the time when position players try to quickly get their work in, hopefully overcome any bad habits, and most importantly, avoid injury. The last thing a player or the team wants is to lose ...

2010 Arizona Diamondbacks: The Biggest Concern

Posted: 24th March 2010 by Jeff Summers in MLB
I was recently approached by Tom Reese from HotStove.com who asked if I would be interested in a series he was doing. Each week he would ask one question to bloggers who cover a team. We would respond with a four or five sentence response. Tom would consolidate all of the answers and post them to his site. It is an interesting concept and one I have had ...

The 17-year-old, left-handed hitting Brito will reportedly receive a six-figure contract from the club. The contract will also includes a scholarship allowing Brito to continue his education. The contract is uncharacteristically large from a Diamondbacks perspective, but the team felt confident based upon the scouting reports they received from its Latin American ...
