Posted: 25th April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Through the first 18 games, the Mets are at .500, and it is like the season is starting fresh. They still don’t have Carlos Beltran, but they do have Ike Davis and a healthy Jose Reyes, and some of the struggling players like Jason Bay and David Wright appear to be on the verge of breaking out.
So I thought I’d take a quick look at some advanced statistics to see ...
R.A. Dickey Might Not be a Bad Idea for New York Mets
Posted: 25th April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Despite the fact that that starting pitcher John Maine said he’s healthy enough to go during his next scheduled start on Tuesday, it might be a good idea for the Mets to call up R.A. Dickey anyways.
Here me out on this one, Dickey has been pitching well so far this season for Triple-A Buffalo. His stats: W-L: 2-1, 3.03 ERA, 4 GS, 1 CG, 29.2 IP, 5 BB, 16K.
His numbers ...
This spring Mets manager Jerry Manuel spoke of his plan to bat shortstop Jose Reyes third in the order. Since then we have not seen the speedy leadoff hitter anywhere but atop the lineup.
Well, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork , this weekend could be the time when we finally see Reyes somewhere other than his customary leadoff position.
“I said, ‘Whatever is best for the team, I’m going ...
1+ Inning Saves Could Become the Norm for K-Rod
Posted: 23rd April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Francisco Rodriguez did something he has never done before as a New York Met: he recorded a five out save and it sounds like manager Jerry Manuel liked what he saw enough that he might use him to do that more often.
“Once he’s ready to go he’s shown he can pitch multiple innings and he can bounce back,” Manuel said .
This all actually started in the 20-inning game against ...
Mets-Cubs: Mets Win 5-2 Thursday to Take Series
Posted: 23rd April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
The Mets got a strong start from Johan Santana and a big sixth inning that propelled them to a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. The win gives them their first series win of the season, as they took three out of four games against Chicago.
Notes
David Wright doubled for the 225th time of his career. That ties him with Ed Kranepool for first place on the all-time Mets doubles list. ...
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Astros, who have very little hope of competing this year, are considering trading their ace Roy Oswalt who has a no-trade clause.
On his radio show this past Monday, WFAN’s Mike Francesa reported that the Astros would listen to offers from the Mets. Although Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork responded to Francesa’s comment by citing “a source familiar with the Astros ...
Carlos Beltran ôMaking Progress,” but Not Ready to Start Rehab
Posted: 21st April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Carlos Beltran met with the doctors in Vail, Colorado this week in what was supposed to be a final test before he started rehab, but even though he is “making progress,” Beltran has not been cleared to resume baseball activity.
The Mets wouldn’t call it a setback, but in reality it is hard to imagine that this isn’t exactly that. Two weeks ago they said it would be any day until ...
What To Expect From Ike Davis: First Week of the Season
Posted: 19th April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Ike Davis, the name alone brings shivers down Met Fans spines. Today he will be making his first start of the season and hit sixth behind the hot Jeff Francoeur.
Expect Ike Davis, 23, to start off the year a little slow, it is a huge adjustment from minor league pitching in Buffalo, but once he gets in the groove of things, the guy is just a natural specimen.
Ike will start ...
The Mets went into this past offseason with the intention of upgrading their pitching staff but came away deciding to stand pat with the five they had.
They justified it by saying that those same pitchers they currently had were all pitchers that had had success in Flushing in the past and that they would again in the future.
What really happened is that they didn’t want to go after John Lackey ...
If Not John Maine, Then Who?: Analyzing the New York Mets’ Rotation Candidates
Posted: 14th April 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
There has been a lot of talk in the streets, on talk radio, and on the interwebs today about John Maine and whether or not the Mets should keep him in the rotation.
If you read my article from earlier today, you know that I would like to see Maine get at least one more start, so I won’t get into that again.
What we should talk about is if Maine is ...
