The Western Conference is closer now then it has been for a long time at this point in the season. The difference between last place and a play-off spot is only four wins, and the difference from last place to first is only seven. That's not to say that there are some good teams in the West, as well as bad teams. We all have our expectations of who's going to ...

Edmonton Oilers’ Winning Streak: Fluke or More to Come?

Posted: 12th December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
As of last night's 5-3 win over the Blues, the Edmonton Oilers have won their fifth straight game. However, that's after being outplayed in the first two periods and going down 3-0. Edmonton came back from a 3-0 deficit in (pretty much) the last period of play. The first goal they scored was with 10 seconds left in the second period, but most of the good plays came in the third. For ...

Toronto Maple Leafs Turning Season Around

Posted: 10th December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
After a terrible start to begin the season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally started to do something productive. Late November and early December have been very good for the Maple Leafs and have allowed them to start climbing away from the bottom of the standings. So far, they have not been able to climb above 14th in the Eastern Conference. However, if they keep playing like they have been, they'll be ...
Whenever you shut out one of the best offenses in the league, you know youÆve done a good job on defense. And if you do that while allowing 35 shots, then you have to give some credit to the goalie. Washington has gotten into the habit of pummeling every team they play with shot after shot. ThatÆs how they win most of their games, they just keep pouring on the offensive ...

Posted: 7th December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
As of Monday night, Martin Brodeur tied Terry Sawchuck for the most shutouts of all time. He did it against that Buffalo Sabres while facing 22 shots on goal. Brodeur tied Sawchuck with his 103rd shutout, which is twice the amount of Chris Osgood who is second among active players. He's also played in a little bit over 1,000 games. Over his career, he averaged a shutout every 10 to 11 ...

Osgood’s Situation: Can a Playoff Goalie Win During the Season?

Posted: 7th December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
Chris Osgood has admitted that he hasn't played his best hockey this year. In fact, there was an article in SI that talked about this being the worst year of his career. Needless to say, Red Wings fans have started to question our goalie, and have started to put games in the hands of Jimmy Howard. That hasn't been working out either. Most people would agree that goaltending is the reason the ...
After receiving every penalty known to man, things have just gotten worst for the Flyers' Daniel Carcillo. During a game Saturday night against the Washington Capitals, Carcillo was given a ton of penalties during a confrontation with Washington's Matt Bradley. He received a minor for cross-checking, a minor for instigation, a major for fighting, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game misconduct, all on the same play. Carcillo received a four-game suspension, and, ...

How Lucky Did the St. Louis Blues Get Against the Los Angeles Kings?

Posted: 6th December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
Saturday night, we saw one of the most bizarre games of the year. St. Louis and L.A. were both scoring fluky goals that you don't really see very much. I don't know if you've seen the highlights or not, but there were a lot of things that both teams could have complained about. The first goal that L.A. scored was terrible communication by the Blues. Either that, or they weren't paying attention ...

Blackhawks-Blue Jackets: Teams Battle In the Season’s Best Shootout

Posted: 1st December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
If you were to ask me, I would tell you that this game was the best game of the season. I was watching the game since the first period, and never wanted to leave the room. During regulation, there was never a clear leader. One team may have had a lead, but you got the feeling that it wasn't going to last. By the end of regulation, they were tied with ...

Maple Leafs’ Gustavsson Taken to Hospital for Observation

Posted: 1st December 2009 by Eric LaForge in NHL
At first glance, it may look like the season for Toronto just got a lot worst. However, Gustavsson was not taken because of an injury. TSN reported that he had an elevated heart rate and was taken to the hospital for observation. This came after the first period of the game Tuesday night against the Canadians. Gustavsson was playing well, and had a shut out going. But, from what I’ve heard, ...
