Hard to Say Goodbye: NFL Vets and Their Comebacks

Posted: 2nd July 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
Every season, hundreds of rookies, veterans, and even a handful of "retired" players all lay it on the line for a chance to suit up on Sundays. The news of Bobby Taylor's comeback attempt had me thinking of a few other noteworthy players who stepped away from the game only to try for one last Sunday. For some, like Jamal Anderson, Terrel Davis, etc., the injuries were too much to ...

JaMarcus Russell and Co.: Failures of NFL QBs Drafted No. 1 Overall

Posted: 11th May 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
Since 1970, there have been 18 quarterbacks taken with the first overall pick of the draft, including five straight from '01-'05. Going back a little farther, to 1936, adds only 9 more - starting with the first quarterback taken first overall, Angelo Bertelli. From that first passer in 1970, Terry Bradshaw, to the last one in 2010, Sam Bradford, these "franchise saviors" have fared farely well. With ...

Jason Campbell: A Lesson in the NFL Business

Posted: 5th April 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
The acquisition of Donovan McNabb by the Redskins is a perfect example of the NFL Business Machine as we know it.  Unfortunately for Jason Campbell, it is more like a gag from the Keystone Cops.  You know the one, where the guy gets the rug pulled out from under him.   Now just a roster move waiting to happen, Campbell is in a race against time.  The starting quarterback jobs are ...

Elijah Alexander: Another Passes Too Young, LB Dead at 39

Elijah Alexander, an NFL Veteran from 1992-2001, passed away yesterday after a five year battle with multiple myeloma.  MM, as it is sometimes called, is a cancer of the white blood cells.  He was diagnosed in 2005, four years after he retired from football. A 10th round pick of the Buccaneers in the 1992 draft out of Kansas State, Elijah played with Tampa for the '92 season before playing from '93-'95 ...

Innocent Until Proven Guilty: Warren Sapp Vindicated

Posted: 25th March 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
It could be a case of too little too late.   The charges against Warren Sapp were dropped yesterday after being proven to have no merit.  Unfortunately for Warren and athletes everywhere, the damage was already done.  On February 6th, Warren was charged with domestic battery after a woman told police that Warren had struck her, choked her, and pushed her down.   She stated that she had been in Warren's hotel room ...

What Now, Mike? Is Time Running Out on Vick’s Second Chance?

Posted: 8th March 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
Things have been quiet on the quarterback front, which actually doesn't bode well for Michael Vick's chances at starting somewhere in 2010.  All the talk about trading Vick, McNabb, or Kolb seems to be just that...talk.   The Eagles don't seem to be entertaining reasonable offers, even though sitting on all three quarterbacks actually HURTS their team next year.   The more time goes by, the more it seems that the Rams ...

Mosi Tatupu, Longtime NFL Fullback, Passes Away at Age 54

Posted: 6th March 2010 by David cotignola in NFL
On February 3rd, 2010, the NFL lost one of it's true "good men" when Mosi Tatutpu passed away at age 54.   Mosi was born in American Samoa, but went to high school in Hawaii.  Upon his graduation in 1974, he enrolled in the University of Southern California.   During his four-year term at school, USC won the National Championship in 1974, and won two Rose Bowls.  Used as a fullback to ...
