Easy Does It: NY Yankees Put Their Faith in Robinson Cano
Posted: 15th March 2010 by Dan Hanzus in MLB
Robinson Cano has a way of making things look easy on the baseball field.
This is both his greatest blessing and biggest curse.
New York sports fans don't like when things look easy. We appreciate effort. Effort means you're taking the game as seriously as we are.
Paul O'Neill chasing down Luis Polonia's drive up the gap in Game Five of the '96 Series, that was hard work. Mickey Mantle barely able ...
Saying you watch the New York Yankees for their defensive prowess is like saying you watch Jersey Shore for the thoughtful and intelligent dialogue.
In other words, you're not kidding anybody.
Defense is baseball's subtle art form, and the Yankees have made their mark on the sport by being the opposite. They are the Bronx Bombers, after all, and they didn't get that moniker for their soft hands and adroit use of ...
Javier Vazquez Works Off Blank Slate in Second New York Yankees Tour
Posted: 9th March 2010 by Dan Hanzus in MLB
Javier Vazquez is the luckiest man in baseball right now, and he probably doesn't even know it.
Imagine a World Series where Bad A.J. shows up instead of Good A.J. in Game Two, or Johnny Damon is thrown out trying to take that extra base in Game Five, or Hideki Matsui rides the pine with a bum knee in Game Six.
Had the Baseball Gods seen things differently, the Yankees may have ...
With the meteoric rise of Jersey Shore and the "gorilla juiceheads" that the MTV hit so lovingly glorified, I was starting to believe that America had turned a corner in its collective stance on steroids.
If you're a baseball fan, that was your hope anyway. Coming off a year in which Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Mark McGwire were either tied or outright admitted to PED use, we were ...
In every interview with Alex Rodriguez, there's always at least one moment where I shake my head in disbelief and think to myself, "My God, what a goober."
It's become a cherished part of my Yankee fan experience these past six years.
Here's how it goes: Reporter asks A-Rod question. A-Rod squints his eyes (this indicates that he's listening really hard) and contorts his lips (I'm not sure what this indicates). Then ...
Yankees’ Derek Jeter Right to Be Relaxed About Future in New York
Posted: 24th February 2010 by Dan Hanzus in MLB
Today over at ESPN.com, sports fans from around the globe were shaken to their core by the following headline:
Jeter Wants To Remain Yankee
This is the equivalent of going over to CNN.com and seeing "Obama Wants To Remain President", or calling up TMZ.com to find "Madonna Wants To Keep Creeping You Out With Her Scary Arms".
So yeah, this is about as non-story as a story can be. But we're in the ...
The 2009 postseason will forever provide fond memories for Yankees fansùa month of baseball that signaled the franchise's return to the apex of the sport. But being a Sports Pessimist (the New York Jets did this to me), I still had a couple of minor gripes. One was Chris Rose, the Best Damn Sports Show hack who was inexplicably given onfield emcee duties following New York's Game Six clincher.
What ...
I was watching In The Line Of Fire the other night, one of those great early 90s movies that time seems to have completely forgotten. The general plot: A grizzled secret service agent (Clint Eastwood) must take down a sinister would-be presidential assassin (John Malkovich) before it's too late. A lot of Renee Russo pant suits are also involved.
It was a star-making performance by Malkovich, who absolutely knocked the role ...
Time for Johnny Damon, New York Yankees to Get On Same Page
Posted: 28th December 2009 by Dan Hanzus in MLB
In the '80s, it was all about "Who Shot J.R.?"
In the '90s, we had O.J. and A.C. cruising down the 405 in the white Bronco.
In the aughts 2000s '00s, Snookie's sucker-punch on Jersey Shore appeared to be the clear frontrunner for this decade's defining TV moment.
But that was before Johnny Damon appeared as guest host of WWE's Monday Night Raw.
As a service to you, the reader, here are ...
New York Yankees: Unafraid To Mess With a Good Thing
Posted: 23rd December 2009 by Dan Hanzus in MLB
I must admit, I didn't foresee the Yankees being so busy this offseason.
They are the World Series champions, after all. Unless you're the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, this means you already are an excellent team. You've proven this, because, um, you won the World Series.
The logical line of thought is to attempt to bring back the team in its entirety. This is the If-It-Ain't-Broke-Don't-Fix-It mentality. It ensures you don't disrupt ...
