Outlaw Plays Well, Everyone Wins

Posted: 28th October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
It was only one game, but Travis Outlaw was a major story on opening night. In a good way. The points were normal, the man shoots jumpers like layups, after all. More impressive was the defensive hustle and relative lack of Outlaw-style basketball oopsies. It was an impressive response to a summer of criticism. Batum going down instantly made Outlaw more critical to the team's success. Suddenly, Outlaw went from a situation ...

Portland Trailblazers Opening Night Observations

Posted: 28th October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
The lights went dark. Thousands of blinking red and white lights surrounded the arena while a thick air of anticipation filled the arena. Opening night was here and it showed why TV does it no justice. My last observation report was after the Blazers opening preseason game that had about as much excitement as a second grade relay race. While anything in that game could have been shown just as well ...

The Gambler Returns

Tigers love pepper. They hate cinnamon. -Alan, "The Hangover" That single response defines my roll here at Bustabucket. I will primarily be writing The Gambler, as well as chiming in with comments and forum posts that spout inane arguments founded on specious reasoning. I will present my viewpoints with confidence and completely unnecessary words (i.e. "specious") to try and make myself sound smart. And, no matter ...

Game 1: Blazers vs. Rockets, 7:00pm KGW

Posted: 27th October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
It's here. One of the most anticipated Blazer seasons in recent memory is finally upon us. It's been a long and dramatic off-season that included drafting three young guys, trading away fan favorites, participation in Eurobasket, dealing with replacement refs, and all the drama an NBA team can handle. Actual basketball will be played this evening and there is no more room for prognosticating, predicting and prophesizing. The Blazers opponent tonight? The same ...

David Stern: A Conspiracy Theory

Posted: 26th October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
In just a matter of days, the NBA regular season kicks off with much anticipation. Fans across the nation get a fresh start for their teams and as Kevin Garnett likes to say, "anything is possible!" One major relief coming into the regular season is the return of the "real" NBA officials. NBA fans suffered through a long preseason with replacement referees. For some reason they were not mentally equipped to ...

Joel Freeland Update: Watch This Man! Edition

Posted: 25th October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
With the Blazers season rapidly approaching it is understandable that you might not be focusing on draftee Joel Freeland. I urge you: make time to follow this man. You know that Freeland is the most NBA ready of the Blazer Euros developing across the Atlantic. The thing is, he might be a bit beyond that. Freeland's Unicaja team (also featuring Portland summer league star Pooh Jeter. Yes, I put "summer league" ...

NBA Refs, Preseason, and Contract Extensions

Posted: 23rd October 2009 by Busta Bucket in NBA
It was announced today that the NBA and it's officials have come to terms on a two-year agreement . After spending the entire preseason with replacement refs, the league will have the real officials for opening night next week. Thinking back to last year, it's hard to imagine replacements could be much worse than the original officials, but it was a nightmare. Here's what Stern had to say about the agreement: "We ...

I got an email last night from Greg Hamilton of the Clinton Street Theatre. In the coming days they will be showing a documentary on the 1977 Blazers team called "Fast Break." Here's the press release on the event, and it sounds like a definite must attend even for Blazer fans. PORTLAND TRAILBLAZER DOCUMENTARY "FAST BREAK" TO PLAY AT THE CLINTON STREET THEATER In celebration of the 40th year for the Portland ...

Today it was announced that Patty Mills would get the 15th roster spot on the Trail Blazers. But you already knew that . Well we didn't think he had much of a chance originally, so he got left off our "Super" Trail Blazers player preview, which has part one and part two . Here's Patty's introduction. Young and brash, he can catch fire and fly like the wind. Patty Mills was not ...
