The Bears boast the most members who have earned election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame so, in theory, picking the Top 50 Bears of all time shouldn't be a huge effort.
Ah, but comparing players of different generations certainly is a challenge. Putting them in order is almost insane.
Yet here I am, taking a shot at something that is guaranteed to draw debate among Bears fans.
Meanwhile, I am including ...
I know it's early and a small sample size. But this shout out to Marlon Byrd goes beyond his early season statistics, which are pretty good by the way.
The man plays the game the right way. He seems to be a genuinely decent human being and a teammate who cares about winning.
In short, he is the opposite of the things many of us dislike about recent Cubs teams.
Sure, the fact ...
Sleepy Ken Griffey, Jr. Needs To Wake Up and Smell His Release
Posted: 10th May 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
You know how they like to say that some players eat, drink and sleep baseball?
Well, it looks like Ken Griffey, Jr. took the sleeping part a bit too literally.
According to a report from the Tacoma News Tribune , Griffey missed an opportunity to pinch hit at a game last week because he was sleeping in the clubhouse.
So Junior was asleep at the wheel of the SS Mariner ship ...
Bringing Up the Cubs’ Starlin Castro Fine As Long As Lou Is Patient
Posted: 28th April 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
This is not simply a reaction to the post by Bruce Levine, who is wrong more often than he is right. There seems to be legitimate buzz around the Cubs organization about bringing up young stud Starlin Castro.
But it doesn't necessarily mean the end of Ryan Theriot as a Cub, for they may simply move The Riot to second base and play Castro at short.
Regardless of what they do with ...
Please tell me this is April Fools Day.
Look, the Cubs have done a lot of dumb things in their history, but moving Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen may be the craziest thing they have done since the "College of Coaches."
For those of you not up to date on Cubs history, the College of Coaches was the brainchild (or brain-dead decision) of then-owner P.K. Wrigley back in 1961, and consisted of ...
Bob Brenly Takes Swipe at Alfonso Soriano, Shot at Lou Piniella
Posted: 20th April 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
On WSCR "The Score" this morning, Cubs analyst Bob Brenly was asked about Alfonso Soriano's reaction to not running hard out of the box on a double in Monday's game.
To set the stage, Soriano admired what he thought would be a home run in the batter's box on a hit that should have been a triple.
When asked about it, Soriano said he hit the ball hard and that's all ...
2010 NFL Mock Draft: Why Jimmy Clausen Won’t Fall as Far as You Think
Posted: 19th April 2010 by Bob Warja in NFL
Usually, there are very strong emotions one way or the other when it comes to college football fans and Notre Dame. But not me.
I am that rare football fan who doesn't hate the Irish, nor do I love the Irish.
But I really like the pro potential of one Jimmy Clausen.
It seems that a lot of so-called draft gurus have Sam Bradford being the top QB in the draft, ...
NHL Playoffs 2010: Chicago Blackhawks Lay an Egg in Playoff Opener vs. Nashville
Posted: 16th April 2010 by Bob Warja in NHL
This was supposed to be "The Year".
Yes, after a long run in last year's playoffs the No. 2 seeded Chicago Blackhawks were expected to compete for Lord Stanley's Cup this year.
And while they still may, they certainly did not get off to a good start at the United Center Friday night.
The Blackhawks found a way to lose to the seventh-seeded Nashville Predators.
Wow.
First of all, what kind of name is "Predators" ...
Orlando Hudson Makes Reckless Charge That MLB Shuns Black Free Agents
Posted: 14th April 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
One of the reasons why real racial issues often get ignored in life is because we are forced to slough through crap like this.
In comments reported by Yahoo, Orlando Hudson implies that MLB discriminates against its black players when they become free agents.
Now, I could run down a litany of examples showing how off-base Hudson is, but let me sum it up like this:
Reckless, stupid and completely untrue.
I know racism ...
It’s Unfair to Jason Heyward to Expect Him to Be The Next Black Savior
Posted: 11th April 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
Look, it's hard enough to be a rookie in the majors. But to have to shoulder the burden of being the guy who brings interest in baseball back to the African-American community is taking this a bit too far.
Meanwhile, I do get it—Heyward is a very talented young black player coming along at a time when Major League Baseball is trying to encourage more African-American participation in baseball.
But there ...
