How The LeBron James Signing May Enhance the Legacy of Kobe Bryant
Posted: 11th July 2010 by Bob Warja in NBA
If we can all agree that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player in NBA history, then he is the measuring stick by which all great players, such as Kobe Bryant, are measured against.
Speaking of Kobe Bryant (how is that for a segue?), just how should we measure his greatness as compared with His Airness ?
One way is by using statistics. But the most common argument in the NBA ...
Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh Are Greater Than LeBron James for the Chicago Bulls
Posted: 5th July 2010 by Bob Warja in NBA
If I'm the Bulls, and it becomes a choice of having Dwyane Wade and a star complementary player like Chris Bosh or simply signing LeBron James only, this would be an easy decision.
Give me Wade and Bosh over LeBron any day of the week.
Sure, James has more star power. And yes, he has more talent than anyone in basketball.
But in the NBA, you need more than one star player to ...
Carlos Zambrano On Paid Restricted List Through The All-Star Break
Posted: 28th June 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry announced on Monday that pitcher Carlos Zambrano was placed on MLB's restricted list, and will not rejoin the team until the All-Star break is over.
According to Hendry, the negotiations were very amicable, with both Zambrano's agent Barry Praver and Hendry working with the player's union to come to a resolution without rancor.
When Zambrano does return, Hendry indicated that it will be up to ...
Ranking the NFL Holdouts: Who is Most Likely to Miss the Entire Season
Posted: 21st June 2010 by Bob Warja in NFL
There has been a rash of NFL stars holding out, which could be costly in the long run.
The NFL has a problem -- which is news in and of itself for a league with ridiculous popularity and prosperity. Plain and simple: A lot of star players have been setting a bad tone with their teams this offseason.
The looming threat of a lockout in 2011 looks like an obvious cause. ...
Top Five Chicago Cubs Who Could Be Traded By MLB’s Trade Deadline
Posted: 21st June 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
It's the start of the summer solstice, so it's getting hot. OK...not that kind of "hot", but...well, I admit it — the pic is just a gratuitous photo to get your attention.
But it is June 21, and the Chicago Cubs sit seven games behind the division leading Cardinals, in third place at 31-38. It's no longer early, and it's no longer too soon to panic.
Now before we get caught ...
Who Should Be the Chicago Bears’ Primary BackùMatt Forte Or Chester Taylor?
Posted: 20th June 2010 by Bob Warja in NFL
It's an admittedly nice problem to have, and, in fact, probably a necessity in the NFL these days: having two competent running backs.
The Bears could have had this previously if they had kept Thomas Jones or Cedric Benson, but that is muddy water under the bridge.
Still, it is a question that seems to be important to the modern NFL player: Why can't both players get an equal number of ...
Fundamentally, Chicago Cubs Are Facing the Error of Their Ways
Posted: 18th June 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
This current Chicago Cubs team has shown the unremarkable ability to lose in many different ways, most often due to a lack of so-called clutch hitting.
And yes, this team has certainly had its share of bullpen issues along the way, just to add insult to injury.
But one thing has remained constant throughout the Jim Hendry era: a lack of fundamental baseball.
Remember when we blamed Dusty Baker for a lack of ...
Tom Izzo Is Staying…Does This Mean That LeBron James is Going?
Posted: 15th June 2010 by Bob Warja in NBA
Tom Izzo announced this evening that he will decline the opportunity to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers and will, instead, continue on as coach of the Michigan State Spartans.
All well and good; in fact, I believe this is the right decision, but does this indicate that, perhaps, Izzo has a feeling that LeBron will be moving on?
Sure, he said all the right things — how he didn't speak to James, and ...
2010 NBA Finals: Celtics’ Paul Pierce May Be Right After All
Posted: 9th June 2010 by Bob Warja in NBA
When the Celtics' Paul Pierce shouted his now infamous quote following game two, many laughed as the Celtics dropped the next game to the Lakers.
But hey, why laugh? In fact, Pierce may turn out to be a prognosticator of sorts. This series may not be coming back to LA.
But not for the reasons that Pierce undoubtedly meant.
No, it’s not because the Celtics were going home to sweep the remaining ...
2010 MLB Draft Results: Cubs Selection Of Hayden Simpson a Real Head-Scratcher
Posted: 8th June 2010 by Bob Warja in MLB
With the 16th selection in the 2010 MLB draft, the Chicago Cubs pick...Hayden Simpson? Who?
That's exactly my thought process when I heard of this very strange and unexpected decision by Cubs Scouting Director Tim Wilken.
The only thing more surprising would have been if the Cubs had picked Homer Simpson.
Even ESPN's Keith Law was stunned, saying that "For one thing, it's not scouting director Tim Wilken's style; he loves athletes and ...
