Posted: 15th April 2010 by Adam Bernacchio in MLB
Just like Monday was a bad day to be an American League second baseman, Wednesday was a bad day to be an American League closer. Whether it was because of injury or because of just flat out pitching poorly, there were a bunch of closers who were replaced on Wednesday. Let’s take a look at what is going on in the world of closers.   Baltimore Orioles Out: Mike Gonzalez. The Orioles ...

The Toronto Blue Jays announced yesterday that they have signed 20-year-old Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to a four-year, $10 million contract. The breakdown of the contract is as follows: 2010: $500,000 2011: $2 million 2012: $1.75 million 2013: $1.75 million The deal also includes a $4 million signing bonus. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were also interested in signing Hechavarria. Hechavarria is most compared to Alfonso Soriano. As much as I am ...
Monday was a rough day for second basemen. Especially second basemen in the American League East. First it was the Baltimore Orioles’ Brian Roberts who went down for the count, and then it was the Toronto Blue Jays’ Aaron Hill. The Blue Jays placed Hill on the 15-day DL because of tightness in his right hamstring. The move is retroactive to April 6th, so Hill could be back as soon as next ...
The two-time defending National League champions have gotten off to another fast start, going 6-1 in their first seven games. Of course, it helps that they have started their season off against the Washington Nationals twice and the Houston Astros. They could be the two worst teams in the National League. Regardless, the Phillies don’t make the schedule, and the way they are hitting, they probably would have beaten anyone. Let’s see what ...
It seems that San Diego Padres RHP Chris Young can never stay healthy. Over the last four years, Young’s starts have gone down every year. He made 31 starts in 2006, 30 starts in 2007, 18 starts in 2008, and just 14 starts in 2009. Now after one start in 2010, the 6′10″ Young is hurt again. The Padres placed Young on the 15-day DL because of right shoulder tightness. The move ...

Seattle Mariners Don’t Expect Cliff Lee Back Until May

Posted: 10th April 2010 by Adam Bernacchio in MLB
Is it me or is there an update on Cliff Lee’s health every week? I just wish he would come back already so I can talk about his pitching instead of his injuries. Well, it sounds like I am going to be talking about Lee’s injuries for at least another couple of weeks, because now it appears Lee won’t be joining the Seattle Mariners until May. “Safely, I think we’re looking at, ...

Baltimore Orioles Closer Mike Gonzalez Implodes Again

Posted: 10th April 2010 by Adam Bernacchio in MLB
I was watching the Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays game on Thursday night and when Orioles’ closer Mike Gonzalez loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, it looked like manager Dave Trembley was going to throw up in his mouth. I could only imagine what Trembley was thinking or how he was feeling when Gonzalez blew his second save in three chances yesterday against the Toronto Blue Jays. ...
Three games, six hits, four home runs, and seven RBI. That isn’t the hitting line for Alex Rodriguez, or Albert Pujols, or even Prince Fielder. It’s the hitting line for Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells. That’s right—VERNON WELLS! After three years of going through injuries and toiling in mediocrity, Wells has started the 2010 season absolutely on fire. He was a one-man wrecking crew against the Texas Rangers in the Blue Jays' ...
