The Philadelphia Flyers came out flat in the first period against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, mustering an embarrassing four shots against New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur.

Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen was guilty of taking two minor penalties in the period, one for hooking, the other for holding, which undoubtedly left Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette unimpressed.

The Flyers were fortunate to escape the first period unscathed, as Flyers goaltender Brian Boucher—who has been the subject of much criticism—played well throughout the first period, stopping all nine shots he faced.

Heaven only knows what Flyers coach Laviolette said to his troops during the first intermission, but whatever he said seemed to work wonders as the Flyers ...
