Another game, another person blows it, Reds 8-Mets 6

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Flushing Baseball Daily in MLB
Jerry Meals is probably being given a free meal by the Reds. Is that an overreaction statement? Yes. Does he deserve it? Yes. Mike Pelfrey did not have his greatest game tonight, but the wheels came off in the 5th inning. I wonder if it’s a reaction to the terrible decision by Jerry Meals.  For those wondering, a pitch came inside to Scott Rolen with the bases loaded with 0 outs in the ...
I've been extremely vocal about my hatred of the All-Star Game selection rules, and the actual selections (I wrote an article about what the rosters should be , and who we must vote for in the Final Vote ). I've been most frustrated about the fact that Joey Votto is left off the team. I was glad to see, however, that after 24 hours since the Final Vote began, ...

Chicago White Sox-LA Angels: Sox Explode for Late Fireworks

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Danny Hauger in MLB
Alexei Ramirez launched a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning against the Angels' Scott Kazmir, letting the Angels know that the 11-run shutout game against the Royals the night before was over.  A phenomenal warning track diving catch by White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin moments earlier brought a standing ovation to Chicago that would pull the White Sox for the early portion of Monday evening's game. New call-ups ...

All-Star Idiocy

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Steven Biel in MLB
The selection of mediocre ninth-inning reliever Matt Capps to the All-Star Game neatly sums up all the major reasons I get annoyed with the whole thing. First, I really try not to care that much. After all, it's such an obviously flawed process that it seems kinda pointless to fret over each individual misjudgment. Besides, it's just an exhibition. Oh, wait, it's not just an exhibition anymore, is it? ...

Fantasy Baseball Players of the Week: Week 13

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Eric Stashin in MLB
Hitter of the Week : It’s not often that the overall best player in the game takes home this award.  Usually he’s just consistently good, while someone else can erupt in any given week to take home the award.  This week it’s different, as Albert Pujols is the winner.  On the surface his .296 (8-27) average is nothing special, but that’s the only “average” thing about his week.  He tied ...
The Associated Press reported today that retired Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks forward Bob Probert died after experiencing chest pains while boating with his family in Windsor, Ontario. Probert was a fan favorite with both Detroit and Chicago. His style of play was a throwback to a previous era where players were considerably tougher than they are today. Probert was not considered a goon because he would often display better than ...

NHL Free Agency: 10 Free Agents To Avoid

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Alison Myers in NHL
Free agents. Every NHL team has at least a few of them every year. Some are prime players who seem to have no problem getting signed right away. Others...well...it's a little harder. These are the players who are injury-prone, had less than stellar seasons, or have attitude issues that keep them from playing well with others. These players can sometimes remain unemployed almost right until the start of the season. They ...

Florida Marlins: Sellers or Buyers?

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Gabriel Smith in MLB
As we reach the midpoint of the season, the Florida Marlins have put themselves in an awkward position. They are currently 38-43, fourth in the NL East division, and 9.5 games out of first place. The record they have leaves them in a selling position, or does it? Before we declare the Marlins sellers at this point in the season, we must ask ourselves these two questions: Is the offense producing? Yes. Are the starting pitchers going ...

Bob Probert, Legendary Tough Guy, Dead at Age 45

Posted: 5th July 2010 by Warren Twocock in NHL
CBC News has reported that legendary NHL enforcer Bob Probert has died at age 45. Probert collapsed after severe chest pains and resuscitation attempts failed. Probert had been boating on Lake St. Clair near Windsor, Ontario when the incident occurred. During an NHL career that spanned 16 seasons, Probert was generally acknowledged as one of the heavyweight champions of the league. Probert's series of battles with Tie Domi and his lengthy ...
