NFC Power Rankings: Week 3

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Richard Resch in NFL
1. Giants (3-0) - Not much to say about their 24-0 drubbing of the Bucs.á Just gotta stay healthy. (Last Week: 1) 2. Saints (3-0) - Drew Brees was held in check, and the Saints still handled the Bills on the road.á Maybe their most impressive win yet. (3) 3. Vikings (3-0) - A little luck and a lot of skill helped Brett Favre throw one of his most memorable touchdown passes ...
Through the past six weeks of pitching duels and pennant races, the games of late August andáSeptember,áthat were once crucial for theácovetedádivisionátitle, have been lost to the illustrious chase for the Cy Young award.á The AL Cy Young race is both complex and misleading, and is still far from decided. Manyáanalystsáhave already engraved Zack Greinke's name into the gold strip at the foot of the award, but I'm not quite convinced. Though ...

NFL 2009 Week Three Wrap Up

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Bobby Lewis in NFL
It is still pretty early in the season, but we learned a few very important things this past weekend. Reports of the New England Patriots' demise were greatly exaggerated. The San Francisco 49ers are for real. The Cincinnati Bengals have matured a lot over the past year. Here are some more observations from around the league: Detroit (1-2) def. Washington (1-2), 19-14: It finally happened. For the first time in 20 ...

A Look at Each NBA Franchise’s Leader in Three Pointers Made

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Steven Resnick in NBA
While I took a break from studying I typed "The NBA moves the three point line in and then back" into a Google search. The second option was, "Can you name the all-time three point shooters for each of the 30 NBA teams." I was confident that I would do well. At first I couldn't understand why none of the names I was putting in would go with the respective teams. In actuality ...

Tropicana Field, a Pleasant Surprise

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Paul Swaney in MLB
Tropicana Field Exterior This article was originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com At first glance, an enclosed baseball field in the middle of the Sunshine State would seem to be an improper way to honor the national pastime. á However, the stadium experience is much more than the playing surface and the difference between ceiling and sky.á ItÆs the appreciation for history and the surrounding neighborhood that makes Tropicana Field not only special, but ...

Classic Dumb Statements About Young San Diego Chargers Players

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Ian Philip in NFL
I love history. I was sitting back and thinking about some of the stupidest things I've read about about three of my all-time favorite Chargers: Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, and LaDainian Tomlinson. Philip Rivers Phil Simms, in the process of touting his son Chris Simms, explained that the Miami Dolphins would be foolish to trade for a loser like Rivers. Simms isn't particularly impressed by Rivers' ability, either ù even if the ...
The Chargers may be channeling their aviator past with a 21st century iteration, but elements of the ground game are still readily apparent. And whether the through-the-trenches chores are handled by LaDainian Tomlinson or Michael Bennett or Darren Sproles, ôAir Turnerö is merely a part of the service that moves the football for these San Diego Chargers. No worries. Philip Rivers will get his yards û he threw for 303 in SundayÆs 23-13 ...

No Love For Romo: Cowboy QB Is Good. Does He Have to Be Great?

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Jack Stentwiller in NFL
Why is there so much criticism of Tony Romo? He is not Tom Brady, but nobody is Tom Brady. Expectations for Romo are far too high. Dallas has a good QB. He is unquestionably the best QB they have had since Troy Aikman. Much in the same way that Philly fans have lambasted solid, consistent, pro-Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb, the media has decided that Romo is yesterday's news and has been ...

New York Yankees Prospect Hitting Dominance Factors

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Greg Fertel in MLB
Recently, Mike Axisa over at River Avenue Blues took a look at all of the minor league pitchers through the lens of a statistic called Dominance Factor. Brett Sullivan developed this statistic over at Project Prospect. The formula is (K%+.72*GB%-BB%)+(Age Level Standard-Actual Age)*7. Since the statistic is relatively simple, Sean P., who I write with over at Pending Pinstripes, came up with the idea to modify this into a hitting statistic. After ...

Dallas Cowboys Should Fire Wade Phillips Immediately After Game

Posted: 28th September 2009 by Bryan Goldberg in NFL
The 4th Quarter is here, and Jerry Jones can't be amused right now. Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett are lucky that their team's highly-engaged owner did not walk onto the field early in the fourth quarter to fire them both on the spot. At the time of this article's publication, the Dallas Cowboys maintain a six point lead... ...but that's the problem. It shouldn't even be a game at this point. The offensive play ...
